The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is the system that regulates body functions like blood flow, pupil dilation, and digestion as well as commands all our internal organs. Our brains also use the ANS to correspond with our immune system which is one of the most critical purveyors of our physical wellness. It's our defense system, our armed forces so to speak, that works to protect us from alien invaders likes bacteria and viruses. It is so precisely designed that it can distinguish between harmful unwanted pathogens and healthy cells and tissue. Until recently, the idea that anyone could influence their autonomic nervous system was thought impossible given its assumed “spontaneous" character. However, new studies are showing that mindful meditation can alter our brain and immune function. When our immune system struggles, it’s a welcome sign for infection and disease. If our immune system is weakened, our whole body system won’t operate as usual. For those who desire to heal without the aid of medication, these studies are welcomed news. The evidence is increasing that mindful meditation impacts our immune system. It has been shown to reduce markers for high levels of inflammation; which are correlated with decreased immune function and disease. It increases the number of CD-4 cells, which aid the immune system by sending signals to other cells commanding them to destroy infections. And it helps promote the stability of chromosomes and prevent their deterioration by increasing telomerase cell activity. This week I will blog different ways to practice mindful meditation, as well the benefits of each practice. What we eat, matters. What we do, matters. What we think, matters.
