My dear friend and mentor, Dr. Marco Ruggiero, has repeatedly stated that "the cause for disease is the grocery store and the cure for disease is in the grocery store”. All my readers know by now that I am constantly researching and learning information that I can share with you all. And today, I want to talk about nutrition and eating foods that are the least muscous forming which means foods that are anti-inflammatory in nature.
I read a book called, The Mucousless Diet System by Professor Arnold Ehret. It was a great read and a reminder how science validates nature and not the other way around. His system would be considered “extreme” by most Americans, however, it can be modified and implemented with success for a road to reovery and health. Interestingly enough, I already use his concepts and love most of the foods he highlights as anti-inflammatory.
Even though this book was written decades ago, it is still so relevant today and identifies the same struggle that exists today which is the knowing how to eat for health. Professor Ehret describes his struggles, illnesses, and how he healed himself, then paying forward he shared this knowledge and healed others. I was so mesmerized by this book that I sat down and read it all the way through in a couple of hours, then to re-read again the next day to ensure I understood the concepts.
It was simple even in it’s scientific explanations. “Diet is the basis of blood formation and the quality of blood is the river of life for your cells.” We all know the body is busy regenerating itself and the only way it does that is through the fuel we feed it so this is no mystery or revelation. Just simple and pure science, but here is the rub…our relationship to food is NOT one of fuel for life, but for pleasure and variety which leads to an often early death or a significantly reduced quality of life because people ar living with life long chronic illnesses.
One of the most important concepts that I walked away with is that our bodies really do not require as much food as the average American consumes per day. I do intermittent fasting daily which is no eating past six in the evening and not eating until around eleven or noon the next day as this gives my body a break to cleanse itself and it forces my body to use ketones which is any excess fat for fuel. It is about the quality and source of your fuel, not quantity, calories, etc., etc. Choose food for life which are foods that are anti-inflammatory.
So why are our food choices and the anti-inflammatory foods so important? These foods are the ones that produce less mucous which allow your digestive system and your lymphatic system to remain intact which directly assist your immune system to stay intact. Your gut can be called your life force…the new term to describe our gut and its inhabitants is the microbiome. If you have a balance of healthy flora which is your good bacteria, yeast, etc. then it will protect you, but when you kill off the good it leaves room for the bad.
Professor Ehret was ahead of the times and I can only imagine what he would think today. Because he also identified the issues like the environmental toxicities in our air, water and food supply. He also identified that the food supply was not only polluted, but lacking nutrients. Now although I do believe we should eat real food, supplementing to ensure you have the correct macro and micro nutirents are necessary today as even organic foods are lacking from a nutritional value stand point. (I can expound on the studies that show how nutritionall depleted our foods are today compared to decades ago.)
The most important take way is that jsut like the plumbing in your house, your plumbing in your body is of utmost importance. What is your body plumbing? It is three fold…it is your bowel and lymphatic system. Kidneys are important too when it comes to elimination and detox, however for this case in point we are focusing on the above mentioned. When you bowels are not clean, your body is storing toxins which creates more inflammation and work on the body especially the immune system which makes it difficult for homeostasis to exist. Likewise, the lymphatic system is supposed to be busy also getting rid of the toxins and the garbage it has eaten so if it is not coming out where does it go? Well, it gets clogged up just like a pipe in your house and this is where chronic inflammation sets in. The recent discovery is that our brain has a menigeal lymphatic vessels inside of our brains…wonder why all the neurological disorders have skyrocketed? It is now, no more a mystery. The book goes into how food ifluences our behaviors…enlightening to say the least.
I can’t do this book justice so I tell you to read it for yourself. You can Google it and find it for free online. It has encouraged me and I am challenging myself and my family to eat as close as to anti-inflammatory as possible. It’s all about balance, but if you want a quality of life and to take back your health this book will get you on the path. I close with this quote by the author of the book that I have been discussing, "Long ago I coined the following phrase, "Life is a tragedy of nutrition". The confusion and ignorance regarding what to eat is in fact so great that it must necessarily be called the "missing link" of the human mind. - Professor Arnold Ehret
