Daily Habits: Guarding Your Focus

What does your daily schedule and habits say about you? I am messerized by successful people so I love to analyze and see what really sets them apart and makes them successful. As a young entrepreneur, I used to think the successful people all had major “secrets”. Well, the reality is that they do not.

Yes, I know…you were looking for that magic sauce or secret as I was too. The reality is that successful people have great, mundane daily habits. Successful people value their time and view their time as money. They guard their focus and are not easily distracted.

I preach to myself before I preach to others. I am writing this morning as a reminder because my kids just got out for summer break and it is so easy to allow them to distract me so I have to make sure that when I am rearranging my schedule that I am doing it with intention and purpose. See staying home with my girls is my WHY so there is no time for me to get distracted and for me to lose sight of why I do what I do in the first place. See although I stay home, I am a mompreneur and I contribute to my household income so if I do not want this to be affected, then I must stay focused.

Assess your daily routine and see how you are guarding your focus. I find that the black, white and gray calendar works best for me. White time is what I like to call production time and is scheduled non-negotiable going to make it happen time, gray time is flexible time, and black out time is family/personal time where I am not working, multi-tasking etc. It is so important that you practice being present with your personal and family time. I know many stay at home parents and their kids report feeling so alone like their parents aren’t there for them. In this day and time, kids are competing with electronics, not just the 9-5. Get your kids buy-in with your calendar, inform them so they know what time is theres versus your prodcution time, then reward them when they respect your time. You will see that the little rewards go a long way and your kids will appreciate their time even more.

Make sure that your calendar is balanced. Make sure that you have meditation time, spiritual time, exercise time, production time, family/personal time, and review time before you call it a day. I like to attempt to mirror my kids schedule to mine. They will have junior golf and tennis clinics and cheer while I have prodcution time. Keep it simple and as my mentor, Lynn Hagedorn, would say, “guard your focus like it is a suitcase with a million dollars in it”. Your future depends on your habits and your focus:)
