Healthy fats do not make you fat, sugars from low fat products make you fat. The low fat craze that went through the 90’s has contributed to an increase of patients with obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, & heart disease. There were a lot of hidden sugars in those low fat products. So let’s discuss what are good fats versus bad fats, then give you some foods in which you can find some of these good fats.
Trans fats and saturated fats are bad for you because they raise your cholesterol and increase your risk for heart disease. But monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are good for you, lowering cholesterol and reducing your risk of heart disease. There is always an exception to the rule and coconut is one of those as it is higher in saturated fat, but it has lauric acid which is a unique lipid that decreases cholesterol and battles bacteria. Use these terms to help you when you are purchasing anything other than raw vegetables.
Lists of the Best Fats:
Avocados
Grass-Fed Butter/Ghee
Coconut Oil
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Wild Caught Salmon/Sardines
Walnuts/Chia Seeds/Flax Seeds
Grass Fed Beef (highest content than other meats)
Remember that everything in moderation, even the good fats. Avocado is my favorite food and fat so I eat between 1/2 to 1 whole avocado per day. I use avocado oil to cook my eggs and meats with as it is tasteless. I use coconut oil in my protein shakes and I bake all my kids cakes and goodies with coconut oil. I use extra virgin olive oil to make all my salad dressings and my hummus’. I am not a sardine fan, but I will grill or blacken some salmon. I love walnuts and I add flax seed and chia seeds to protein shakes to my salads. I do eat grass fed beef. Everything seems better with butter and I use the KerryGold Butter on broccoli asparagus, & most all vegetables.
Enjoying these wonderful fats in moderation can actually help lower your cholesterol, help you lose weight, and reduce your risk of heart disease and inflammation. The next time you get hungry, drink a glass of water first, if this does not resolve your hunger, then grab one of these fats instead of something with carbs and sugars. Here’s you revamping your pantry with healthy fats and taking your health back.
